Simón Bolívar (July 24, 1783 – December 17, 1830) was a military and political leader who helped lead independence movements in Latin America during the early 19th century. Bolívar played a key role in the liberation of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia from Spanish rule. He is often referred to as "El Libertador" (The Liberator) and is considered to be one of the most influential figures in Latin American history. Bolívar also served as the first president of Gran Colombia, a federation that included modern-day Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela. His vision of a united South America was not realized during his lifetime, but his efforts inspired future leaders who would continue the struggle for independence and unity. Today, Bolívar is revered as a national hero and his image can be found on currency, public buildings, and monuments throughout much of South America.
